The Beginning of Black Roses Playing Cards (2014)
In 2014, driven by a dream to create my own custom deck of playing cards, I pulled an all-nighter. As the first light of day broke and birds began to sing, the first edition of Black Roses Playing Cards was born.
Only one detail was missing - the now-iconic Black Roses logo at the center of the back design, which I added a few hours later after catching some sleep.
The Crowdfunding That Made It Real
Thanks to the support of 38 amazing backers, we raised €938 in just 2.5 weeks. That was just enough to print 100 decks, turning my vision into reality.
This marked the beginning of what would become one of the most beloved indie playing card brands.-
The Return - A Faithful Replica of the Original Deck
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Black Roses Playing Cards in 2024, I've brought back the very first edition - as a faithful replica of the 2014 design.
While the look and layout remain true to the original, this anniversary edition features improved card stock and handling, offering a noticeably smoother and more refined experience.
New Secrets Hidden Within
Although this replica stays true to the original design, I couldn't resist adding a few subtle upgrades for the sharp-eyed collector to discover. You'll find a hidden replica inscription on the bottom flap of the tuck box and a striking gold tear band - a feature that was not included in the original run of just 100 decks.
These additions don't alter the classic design, but they do allow this edition to stand out from the original - while honoring the heritage and spirit of the very first Black Roses Playing Cards.
True to the Original - Down to the Smallest Detail
The original deck was printed by MPC back in 2014. Over the past 10 years, MPC has made several changes - from the paper stock to the construction of the tuck box.
But for this anniversary edition, it was especially important to me that even these small production details match the original deck exactly.
Luckily, I found a manufacturer who was able to recreate the old-style box just the way I envisioned it - complete with the square tuck flap and the oversized half-moon cutout.
While I actually appreciate the improvements MPC has made over the years, it simply wouldn't be a true replica if I didn't pay close attention to exactly these kinds of details.
A Collector's Must-Have
This 2014 replica isn't just a reprint. It’s a tribute to the humble beginnings of the Black Roses Playing Cards legacy.
Whether you're a dedicated collector, magician, cardist, or simply love finely crafted decks, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of playing card history.
